What to Expect When Getting Braces from Your Battle Creek Orthodontist

If you are in need of orthodontic treatment, you may be worried about the changes you will have to make and what to expect. To help prepare you and put your mind at ease, Your Battle Creek orthodontist shares some of the main things you can expect before, during, and after your braces are put on.

One of the biggest concerns people have before they begin orthodontic treatment is that getting braces will be very painful and comfortable. Fortunately, while this may have been the case in the past, our use of Damon™ System braces (and the absence of palatal expanders) means getting braces is more comfortable than it’s even been. You may also be worried that people may judge you or look at you differently. Fortunately, this is just not something that really happens with braces being much more common for people of all ages.

After your braces are placed, there are some changes you will have to make to your daily routine. You will want to stay away from foods that are excessively hard, sticky, or crunchy as they can actually knock off or move your brackets. It’s also important to avoid chewing gum, drinking sugary / acidic drinks often, and chewing on fingernails and other objects. You will also need to adjust how you brush your teeth, so you can keep them clean and in good condition throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Once your braces are removed, you will need to wear a retainer in order to prevent your teeth from shifting. You should also schedule a dental cleaning and exam right away, as even if you have kept up with cleaning during treatment, there will be areas of your teeth that have not been exposed and will need to be cleaned.

At Bandeen Orthodontics of Battle Creek, we know that getting braces can be daunting.
