Tips for Avoiding Bad Breath While You’re Wearing Braces

Generally speaking, those who wear braces are more susceptible to having foul smelling breath than those who don’t. The reason for this, is that food is more likely to get stuck, which in turn creates bad breath causing bacteria in the mouth. In this post, we will give you some tips to help combat bad breath while you’re wearing braces.

Brush and floss your teeth regularly (and properly). If you’re wearing braces, you must brush and floss your teeth in the morning and before you go to bed, but it’s also a great idea to brush and floss them after you eat a meal. Your orthodontist will provide you with brushing and flossing techniques to ensure you’re doing both properly, as well.

Use a water flosser. Water flossers, commonly called Waterpiks, are an excellent option for those who are wearing braces as they thoroughly clean difficult to reach places where bacteria grows. They use a powerful stream of water that removes food and particles from teeth and gums while also cleaning them.

Use mouthwash. Once you’re done brushing and flossing your teeth, rinse with ADA approved antimicrobial mouthwash per the instructions. This will help to kill bad breath causing bacteria.

Drink enough water. When you do not drink enough water, your body becomes dehydrated and doesn’t produce enough saliva which helps to kill bacteria in your mouth.

Have your teeth professionally cleaned. As is the case when you’re not wearing braces, you should have your teeth professionally cleaned at least every six months (or as recommended by your dentist).
